Community Speed Watch

Community Speed watch is a national imitative where volunteers collaborate with local police, to reduce speeding in areas of concern. Volunteers use an approved speed detection device to record vehicles exceeding the speed limit.
Training
Before you can carry out your first session, there is an online training module. This takes less than an hour to complete. Then road-side training on use of the kit is provided by existing team members. Each session has three volunteers (good for a chat), one to operate the gun, one to write the results and the last to call out registrations plates and other vehicle details of offenders.

What happens next?
Drivers who exceed the speed limit are initially contacted by letter from the police. Repeat offenders and those significantly speeding may be visited by their local police regardless of where they live. A National Register database exists to drives who speed in different counties are still noted.

Why is it important?
It’s not about reporting your neighbour. It is a proactive, community-led initiative that aims to improve road safety and create a calmer, more pleasant environment for all Police forces across the country, implementing the scheme, show a proven, significant reduction in drivers traveling above the speed limit, demonstrating the positive impact of the scheme.

Our Speed Watch Team
We are very proud to have a dedicated team of volunteers who give up their time, to raise awareness of speeding in Burstow and Smallfield. The sessions are one-hour long and booked month to month. They take place at key areas around the Parish to encourage drivers to drive responsibly. You can volunteer for as many or few sessions as you wish, at times to suit you.

If you are interested in joining or learning more, we would love to hear from you!

Keepers Corner Nature Garden

The Parish Council is developing a new nature area on parish-owned land, creating a space where wildlife can thrive and the community can enjoy.

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help transform the site into a welcoming habitat for birds, insects, animals and native plants. We have already begun the work thanks to the team of British Gas volunteers who cleared the entrance of brambles, nettles and weeds. More clearance is needed, especially to open up some small clearings within the wooded area, so that light can penetrate and encourage ground vegetation to grow for animals to eat.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities as the project develops.

No previous experience is necessary – just a willingness to get involved and enjoy working outdoors. Whether you can spare a couple of hours occasionally or would like to volunteer on a regular basis, every contribution will help.

It is a fantastic opportunity to get involved and meet new people, learn practical conservation skills, improve local biodiversity, and help create a lasting green space for future generations. Families, individuals, and community groups are all welcome to take part.

By volunteering, you'll be helping to create a healthier environment, support local wildlife, and leave a positive legacy for our parish. We hope you'll join us in bringing this exciting community project to life.
